Afghanistan: Life under the Taliban

Updated: September 11, 2024

Since seizing power in 2021, the Taliban have imposed many of the same harsh restrictions for girls and women that characterised their draconian 1996-2001 rule.

Taliban leaders have excluded girls from high schools, barred women from universities and most jobs, and severely limited their freedom of movement.

Humanitarian experts say the education and work bans will exacerbate the country's severe economic and humanitarian crisis.

The Taliban's return to power - and spiralling poverty - have triggered a mass exodus of Afghans. Some have managed to rebuild their lives overseas while others are living in limbo with little support.

Here is a collection of Context's reporting on Afghanistan and the impact of the Taliban's takeover.
