Dark Waters: Ships that hide crimes on the high seas

A Context investigation

The world’s maritime shipping industry is run on the back of almost 2 million seafarers.

Many of them are trafficked, exploited and forced to work under dangerous conditions. They are also increasingly at risk of abandonment.

From countries dodging sanctions to rogue operators benefiting from opaque regulations, the sea is rife with malpractice and abuse. The shipping industry, which accounts for 80% of global trade, including 90% of energy, is an under-reported sector.

In this investigative series for Context, reporter Katie McQue uncovers the many reasons for and long-lasting impacts of unscrupulous practices on sea.

This series was produced in partnership with the Pulitzer Center’s Ocean Reporting Network.
